foreign, eva castiel
The first monograph dedicated to São Paulo-based artist Eva Castiel, Foreign traces her career in reverse chronological order, beginning with her most recent installations in 2018 and moving back to her paintings from the 1980s. The book brings together works that explore themes such as memory, erasure, and belonging, contextualized through eight texts by different authors.
The graphic design establishes a subtle dialogue with the artworks and their physical and conceptual qualities, incorporating production details such as embossed elements on the cover and die-cuts applied both to the cover and the opening section. Circular cutouts that pierce through the initial pages create visual dialogues between the images, suggesting connections, overlays, and relationships among the various fragments.
The book is divided horizontally at the center, with the Portuguese text in the upper half of the page and the English version below. A shifting rhythm unfolds between horizontal and vertical arrangements, punctuated by full-bleed images that guide the reader through the book.
