The book’s design makes typographic references to the Plakatstil movement and German Expressionist poster art, which defined the aesthetics of Central Europe during the novel era. On the cover, the title is composed to represent the creature that gives the book its name–a giant man made of clay. The Dida typeface, with its robust geometric forms, complements this graphic approach.
The second font used, for the chapter titles, was Faune, a typeface that, according to its creator, Alice Savoie, “claims a complementary and atypical voice” and “its strangeness allows it to fully assume its role of disturbing the rhythm.” This description resonates with the themes of duality and uncanny elements present in Gustav Meyrink’s fantastic literature. The main text was set in the GT Alpina typeface.
