O nome do medo, Rivane Neuenschwander

The project O nome do medo (The Name of Fear), by Rivane Neuenschwander, consisted of collaborative workshops held at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro. In these workshops, the artist mapped the fears of participating children through group-sharing activities. The children were then invited to draw capes that represented those fears. From these drawings, the artist, in collaboration with designer Guto Carvalhoneto, produced the capes that were exhibited at the Museu de Arte do Rio – MAR.

The project’s book gathers records from the workshops, critical essays by various authors, and an interview-dialogue between the artist and curator and art critic Lisette Lagnado. The publication is organized into two volumes enclosed within a single cover, evoking the gesture of wearing the capes created by the children. The list of fears was typeset in the geometric typeface Stolzl Display–named in honor of the only female master at the Bauhaus. This typeface became a recurring graphic element in the project’s visual identity, featuring in the catalogue and all graphic materials accompanying the exhibition.
